Downers Grove North HS wraps up fall athletic seasons
DOWNERS GROVE, Ill. — Denise Kavanaugh, Athletic Director at Downers Grove North High School, has a lot to be proud of beyond the success of the school’s sports teams.
“All of our coaches develop a competitive and caring environment for our student-athletes. They are passionate about coaching that is for sure! I am always proud of our athletic community here at North. Our student-athletes, coaches, athletic trainers and families work together to make a positive season occur, which is extremely special and valued by our community, ” Denise said.
The DGN fall athletic season did not disappoint. The Trojan teams set the tone for a successful year of athletics by coming out strong and excelling on the field and on the court. Both the girls’ and boys’ cross country teams had notable finishes and performances, while the football team won a coveted historical rivalry for the first time in more than fifteen years.
Girls’ Cross Country
This year’s team success could be attributed to many things, one of which was the depth of its talent. In a sport that can lend itself to individual victories and PRs, this team’s collective ability and work ethic led them to not just a decorated season, but a trip to the IHSA 3A State Championship Meet, where they finished in fifth place. Coach Tim McDonald was more than pleased with the success his team had this season, saying, “We set a team target in July of finishing in the Top 5 at the State meet. Through hard work and working together, the girls were able to run consistently and hit that target.”
Boys’ Cross Country
Head Coach John Sipple says he is so proud of this year’s team and how they came together this season. He explains, “The team really showed a lot of progress throughout the season. While we improved as a whole on our races, times and team scores, the more significant growth occurred in the leadership that our Juniors and Seniors demonstrated which in turn helped the younger runners grow as people throughout the season.” That leadership led the team to a first place finish at the IHSA Sectional meet, and an impressive third place finish at the IHSA State meet.
Football
DGN’s football team also experienced a victorious season, becoming the first team since 2006 to win six regular season games. They also brought home the coveted Old Oaken Bucket, beating long-time rival Hinsdale Central for the first time since 2005. Qualifying for the IHSA State playoffs was another highlight of the season, as was beating Lincoln Park High School in round one to advance to the next game. The season ended with a tough loss to top-ranked Mount Carmel in the second round of the State playoffs.
Head Coach Joe Horeni remarked, “We had a great year. We are so proud of our seniors for their dedication and leadership. To bring the bucket back home and have six regular season wins is great for our program. We will use this season to continue to motivate us in future years!”
