Freeland HS and MS pompon teams compete at MidAmerican Pompon Competition: High Kick

FREELAND, Mich. — On Sunday Nov. 6, pompon teams from all over the state traveled to the Dow Event Center in Saginaw to compete in the MidAmerican Pompon Competition: High Kick. This competition highlights fun pompon routines to multiple different themes with kick line being the focus. This competition is intended to challenge teams to get creative, improve their kicking abilities, and use showmanship to bring a theme to life.

The Freeland High School Varsity Pompon team competed in the large varsity division as the only class B team against class A teams and earned fifth place. Their disco theme was a showstopper and a work of heart.

The Varsity team is made up of 17 members. Only 10 are returning varsity members, and 9 members who had never competed at High Kick. With the 70’s era making a comeback in fashion and the endless amount of energy shared by the team, Varsity coach Kailyn Humphrey thought disco was the perfect theme.

This was the first time ever that a middle school team from Freeland went to the high kick competition. The middle school team is made up of 24 members, half of them being new to the sport.

The middle school team’s them was centered around butterflies and earned fourth place. This theme was chosen because butterflies represent transformation, growth, and change, which is exactly what this team has persevered through this season.

“This routine was not only cute and exciting,” Middle school coach Lexy Weersma said. “But also meaningful and symbolic. We brought these wondrous creatures alive with butterfly inspired music, green wings, and energetic choreography.”

The competition preparation started just a month before. After two weeks of learning the routine, they spent two more weeks adjusting and perfecting it. And now that High Kick is over, the girls get a few weeks of rest before they gear up for the winter season which includes the regional and state competitions as well as half-time basketball game performances.
