Jackson HS swimmer and diver Megan Jones shares appreciation for program

JACKSON, Mich. — Jackson High School recently opened a brand new aquatic center with 14 lanes for swimmers to compete side by side and nine extra wide speed lanes ideal for competition. With room for 499 spectators to watch swim meets, and a $60,000 scoreboard donated by County National Bank, this new facility is like nothing else in Jackson.

Joe Zessin, Jackson High’s Head Swim Coach for Boys and Girls, shared how this new facility is already proving to revitalize not just the swim team, but the community as well. “We are so fortunate to have the facility that we do at Jackson High School. I really can’t thank the community enough for their support.” As a coach, Zessin’s hope is for the program to leave a lasting positive impact on the swim team, and has found that teaching the kids to “keep showing up, and giving your best each day” sets the tone for their team.

Swimmer and Diver, Megan Jones, is a Senior at Jackson High School, and shares that same passion for team unity and dedication. “Swimming requires a massive physical effort, and takes a huge toll on the body”, Megan shared. “The motivation to keep going stems from seeing the team everyday.” In addition to swimming and diving, Megan is also involved in Jackson Area Gymnastics and Girls Varsity Tennis. She shared that her dive coach, Gary Ray, has also been a great encouragement to her athletic career. “He constantly tells me “You’re better than you think you are,” Megan said this advice has helped her remember that “deep down, everyone’s scared, but it’s how one interprets those scared feelings that determines success.”

Megan has found that adding extra curricular activities has played a vital role in creating relationships and building community outside of the classroom. She recommends students entering high school find a niche for themselves as well, whether it be a sport, club, etc. In addition to making countless friends, learning from role models, and developing leadership skills, being a part of the swim and dive team has taught Megan that anyone can learn to work together. “Our team is able to come together to work towards one common goal every practice, meet and season.”
