Q&A with Brother Rice HS lacrosse player Theo Ley
BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich. — Theo Ley, 16, is a sophomore at Brother Rice High School and a passionate lacrosse player. Theo has displayed his fast and furious skills on the field for the past 10 years. Along with playing on the Brother Rice Warriors lacrosse team, Theo has also been a member of the Juiced Cherries Lacrosse Club for Student Athletes. I had the opportunity to ask Theo a few questions about his lacrosse career thus far and what his goals are for the future.
What are your personal goals within your sport/athletic dreams?
Theo Ley: I would like to play lacrosse in college. Whether it’s the Big Ten, ACC or Ivy League.
What is your biggest challenge in your sport, and what do you do to manage this challenge?
Ley: The biggest challenge within the sport of lacrosse is being able to comprehend all the plays and putting your own spin into the play all while looking out for your teammates at the same time.
What was the best advice you were ever given?
Ley: The best advice I was ever given was that hard work beats talent, when talent doesn’t work.
What do you love about your sport?
Ley: There are multiple reasons why I love the sport of lacrosse. The first thing is the people you meet and the family that starts to form within the team. The second thing is the sense of competition that the sport brings, along with the camaraderie between teammates.
Do you have a pregame ritual you follow?
Ley: I always listen to music and say a prayer before every game.
What do you like to do outside of your sport?
Ley: When I’m not playing lacrosse, I like to play video games, fish, ski, and hang out with my friends and family.
What has being a member of a team taught you?
Ley: Being a member of a team has taught me many valuable lessons like teamwork and hard work. These two things have taken me further than I ever imagined. That’s saying a lot being only 16.
What is the best piece of advice you received from a coach or mentor?
Ley: In order to succeed and reach your goals, you first have to make mistakes and learn from them.
Describe a mistake you made while competing and how you overcame it.
Ley: A mistake that I’ve made while competing is, not using my teammates when I needed them most. I overcame this by opening myself to my teammates and we started to see success in our team through it.
With Theo’s determination, strength, and laser focus, his future in lacrosse looks bright.
