Q&A with Southland Saints head coach Schin Kerr

FLOSSMOOR, Ill. — With the season starting for the ABA, the powerhouse teams are finishing where they left off. Dominating and keeping chemistry from the year past with some new faces, the Steel City Yellow jackets are at the top of the crowd in the Nation Power Ranking with a 5-0 record after last year’s championship Performance.

The Southland Saints, a new Pro ABA team this year, have come out of the gates swinging as an organization! They are building their hype and serving the community behind the leadership of their owner Les Rodgers. The Saints have continued to look the part as a franchise here to stay, but the product on the court has not yet delivered a win to the Southland area. With a record of 0-3, the Saints look to turn this thing around when they face the Aurora Sons on December 4, 2022.

Schin Kerr, former NBA player and first-year head coach with the Saints sat down with me for an exclusive interview.

Coach Kerr, the season is still young, but your team has started 0-3. For as much hype around the team why has this team failed to get a win?

Schin Kerr: Actually, we haven’t failed at anything. In fact, we’ve collected several small wins each week we play. As a new team, a new system our guys are getting accustomed to, we’re putting in the work and developing as scheduled. As anything newly started, you continue to work, continue to build, trust the process and we’ll be very competitive.

In the game against the Aurora Sons, your team was up 2 at halftime. This team struggles to finish down the stretch. What adjustments need to be made late in the game?

Kerr: Boils down to execution. We’ll continue to clean up mistakes, improve weekly and we’ll execute more.

You have a rematch against the Aurora Sons. Is this game considered a rivalry game between the two clubs?

Kerr: Again, we’re a new team. We haven’t been around long enough to develop a rivalry. Rivalries are fun but we’re focusing on our team, improving and upholding the standard we’ve set for ourselves.
