Top 10 Florida Gators men’s basketball players of all time
9. Vernon Maxwell (1984-88)
A controversial placement no matter what. Maxwell was one of the best players in Gators history, there’s simply no denying that as evidenced by his 16.6 scoring average which still ranks seventh in program history. However, after it was discovered that Maxwell took money from agents while still a member of the team, the guard had the final two years of his stats taken away which would’ve placed him as the highest-scoring Gator ever and second-highest scorer in SEC history at the time with 2,450 points. Due to this controversy, Maxwell’s stats aren’t as flashy but people who saw his play and felt his impact cannot deny that he is a critical part of program lore as helped lead Florida to their first NCAA Tournament appearance and first Sweet Sixteen berth.
These days of the NIL have me thinking.
Vernon Maxwell left the University of Florida after four years as the Gators' all-time leading scorer (2,450) and the No. 2 scorer in Southeastern Conference history behind LSU's Pete Maravich. 1/2 pic.twitter.com/stbREaR3Sc
