Deion Sanders’ full speech to CU Buffs: ‘Jump in the portal’
BOULDER, Colo. (BVM) – Deion Sanders a.k.a. Coach Prime spoke to the Colorado Buffaloes football team on Sunday for the first time as the new head coach. His speech, which should be fittingly called, “I’m coming,” could go down as one of the most iconic speeches in college football history.
Sanders’ first speech to the Buffs has over 2 million views on YouTube in 24 hours. It’s also going massively viral on TikTok and Twitter because of the tough love approach he took to greet his new team. To watch Sanders’ full speech, see below.
“Now let’s get to business,” Sanders started with.
Sanders noted that some of the players were too complacent and said that things were about to change.
“When I get back (from finishing business with Jackson State), it’s ain’t gonna be no hats… no hoodies… and no phones,” Sanders said. “I wish you would bring a phone in my meeting, ain’t gonna be no earrings in my meeting.”
But the most controversial moment in his speech came when he told the players to consider hitting the transfer portal.
“We got a few positions already taken care of because I’m bringing my luggage with me, and it’s Louis,” Sanders said. “It ain’t gonna be no more the mess that these wonderful fans, the student body and some of your parents have put up with for probably two decades now. I’m coming.
“And when I get here, it’s gonna be changed, so I want y’all to get ready to go ahead and jump in that portal and do whatever you’re gonna get because the more of you jump in (the portal), the more room you make, because we bringing kids that are smart, tough, fast, disciple, with character… is that you?”
Sanders also noted that the “quarterback is coming” as well as “about 10 more of them (players).”
After a player asked about the major changes he needs to see moving forward, Sanders responded with, “everything.”
The speech is creating mixed reactions online. Some fans say that the team needed to hear it considering that they went 1-11 for the regular season. Others noted that the speech was a bit harsh for their first-ever encounter.
