Q&A with Mulgrave School volleyball player Mia Ruse
WEST VANCOUVER, British Columbia — A Q&A with Mia Ruse who is a volleyball player at Mulgrave School.
What are your personal goals within your sport/athletic dreams?
Mia Ruse: My goal with volleyball is to play at a university level and see how far I can go.
What is your biggest challenge in your sport, and what do you do to manage this challenge?
Ruse: My biggest challenge in this sport is continuously jumping higher and moving faster. I manage this challenge by going to the gym to improve my vertical and speed.
What was the best advice you were ever given?
Ruse: The best advice I’ve been giving is to live in the moment and don’t spend time dwelling on the past because you can’t change it.
Do you have a saying or motto that you like to live by?
Ruse: A saying that sticks with me is hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.
What do you love about your sport?
Ruse: I love that volleyball is as much a mental sport as it is physical.
Do you play in university? If not, would you like to?
Ruse: I’m currently in high school but I would like to play in university.
Where do/did you go to school/where do you work?
Ruse: I go to Mulgrave School.
What do you like to do outside of your sport?
Ruse: I like to travel, play other sports such as skiing, swimming, biking, and basketball, and I like to hang out with friends.
How would you describe your personality?
Ruse: I would say that I’m an outgoing and friendly person.
What is your favourite snack food?
Ruse: I love fruit and anything with peanut butter.
What is your favourite song or music artist to get you ready for a game?
Ruse: Before games I listen to the pre-game playlist with my team. There are lots of songs from the 2000’s.
Do you have a pregame ritual you follow?
Ruse: Yes, I always have a piece of chocolate before I play.
What has being a member of a team taught you?
Ruse: Being a member of a team has taught me that I am always surrounded by people who support me and vice versa.
What is the best piece of advice you received from a coach or mentor?
Ruse: The best advice I’ve received from my coach is that your journey will never be the same as someone else’s.
