Dothan HS football team completes successful season
DOTHAN, Ala. — When Dothan Wolves head football coach and I sat down for an interview one year ago, he was excited about the future of the Dothan Wolves Football Team. He guaranteed that team members would be stronger, disciplined and on a nutrition program. And he added, “we will win some games.” The Wolves delivered on everything Kennedy mentioned.
The team finished 8-4 and had their first playoff win since 1997. They moved on to the second round but lost to Auburn who went on to be the 7A State Championship runner-up. Of the Wolves four losses, two were against Auburn, one against Central-Phenix City who made it to the state semi-finals, and one to rival Enterprise who also made it to the second round of the playoffs. Kennedy said, ““When we took over the program, we asked the kids to buy in to the concept of believing and then seeing. They believed from day one and they saw how successful we could be. I am just excited for the kids to be a part of a winning team.” He expressed gratitude for the support the team received from the students and the community. The student body was so enthusiastic that they won the state-wide AHSSA 2022 Fan Challenge Winner.
Senior running back, Ramon Blackmon rushed for 1,506 yards and 26 rushing touchdowns. Both broke school records. Junior Tamarion Peterson (Petey) gained 1,250 yards on the ground. “He will be the main guy next year,” Kennedy said. Also returning in the backfield will be A.J. Alexander, Anthony Brooks, and Zach Walker. The offense will have six returning starters and the defense will have seven including play maker Ke”Aviyon Durry. He feels confident at kicker with Wesley Farmer and Mason Rowe returning. He said the position of quarterback is a point of emphasis and they are looking at a few who could potentially fill that role.
The Wolves started their off-season program right after Thanksgiving. The focus will be on strength, speed training, and a balanced nutritional program.
Kennedy expects no coaching changes. He said, “I don’t anticipate any changes in our coaching staff. They are a great group that cares about kids and wants to see this program be successful.” Congrats Wolves on a great season!
