Catching up with former Martinsville football players Beau Hess and Adam Field

MARTINSVILLE, Ind. — I still remember when these two signed their intent to go to college to play football. Athletic Director, Kip Staggs, reminded them they will “always be Artesians.”

Both Beau Hess and Adam Field played for Martinsville and graduated in 2021. Hess wore number 34 for Martinsville and played linebacker. Field wore 13 and played the position of safety.

I asked both to tell me a little about their high school football career and college.

“I attend Franklin College and I’m studying Sociology,” according to Hess. “College football is a lot different for me because it takes a lot more knowledge of the game. Also the level of talent and athleticism in college is extremely elevated. The only former teammate I have played against so far is Adam. My favorite part about continuing to play football is I get to become a student of the game and become more educated on why we do certain things in the game. I also like being able to test myself against the best competition.

“I come back for many of Martinsville’s games and I love it. It’s awesome seeing the job coach Dugger has done with the team. I do miss high school football because there is nothing like playing for your hometown especially a town that supports its football program like Martinsville.”

I asked Hess if he critique’s the payers. “I will critique some of the guys because I’ve played with them,” he said. “And I like to push them to be the best they can be.”

“In high school I was #13 and played safety,” Adam informed me. “ I still play safety and am proud to wear #28. I study Computer Science at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. For me, college football is the same as high school, except every aspect of the game is at a higher level. It’s faster, the players are better, and your game plan and preparation is much more critical. Beau is the only teammate I’ve played against directly, though I played Tyler Cox’s and Charles Proctor’s teams (Trine and Manchester) last season. I continue playing football because there’s simply no greater reward than accomplishing a task for which you’ve prepared for months or even longer. The fact that I get to experience that with my teammates makes the feeling that much more intense and meaningful.

“I come back and watch the MHS games whenever I have a chance, and I watch online when I can’t make the games in person to watch my brother, Ben Field. I miss it more than I ever thought I would. Like Beau said, there’s nothing like playing for a town that cares about your football program as much as Martinsville does. And, of course, I’ll critique the players and coaches as I watch because in my mind, as I’m sure is true of everyone else that’s watching, that’s still my team and I still celebrate every victory and mourn every loss as if I were still the one playing. For someone wanting to play college football, they should know that it takes a lot of hard work. But if you remind yourself why you’re doing it, it suddenly becomes easy.”

Great job, Artesians!  We are very proud of you!
