Ranking the top 10 Dallas Mavericks players of all time
6. Jason Kidd (1994-97, 2008-2012)
The current head coach of the Mavericks was drafted by the franchise No. 2 overall in 1994, and spent a little over two seasons in Dallas before being traded to the Suns. Kidd was solid in his first stint in Dallas, highlighted by a 1995-96 season in which he averaged 16.6 points, 9.7 assists and 6.8 rebounds, making the first of 12 career All-Star appearances. Kidd went on to have some strong years in Phoenix before making a couple of NBA Finals appearances with the Nets. Over a decade after he had left Dallas, Kidd was traded back to the Mavs during the 2007-08 season. While his scoring numbers weren’t quite what they were early in his career, Kidd gave Dallas the steady point guard they had been searching for, producing an All-Star season in 2009-10 while averaging 10.3 points, 9.1 assists and 1.8 steals. Kidd was also a crucial part of the Mavs’ title run in 2011, finally earning a long-awaited championship after two failed trips in New Jersey. Following the title, the point guard played one final season with the Mavs in 2011-12, and sits fifth in franchise history in 3-point makes both in the regular season and playoffs, 10th all time in rebounds (2,755), and third all time in both assists (4,211) and steals (954).
