Ranking the top 10 Dallas Mavericks players of all time

4. Mark Aguirre (1981-89)

Coming out of DePaul University as the 1980 Naismith Player of the Year, Aguirre was taken with the No. 1 overall pick by the Mavericks in 1981. It didn’t take long for him to prove just how good of a scorer he would become in the NBA, averaging 18.7 points as a rookie. Aguirre would improve in each of the next two seasons, averaging 24.4 points in 1982-83, and an impressive 29.5 points in 1983-84 as he made his first All-Star appearance. The 6-foot-6 small forward averaged 25 points or better in three of the following four seasons as well, again being named an All-Star in 1986-87 and 1987-88. Aguirre was traded from the Mavs to the Detroit Pistons in 1989 where he became a two-time NBA champion. However, his success in Dallas has not been forgotten. Aguirre still sits third all time in both points and made field goals for the Mavs with 13,930 and 5,441, respectively. He proved throughout his career that he was more than just a scorer as well, sitting sixth all time in franchise history in rebounds (3,244), and ninth in steals (502).
