Brad Edwards: The 10 best active coaches without a national title

10. Scott Satterfield
Seasons as FBS head coach: 9 (Louisville and Appalachian State)
Record: 73-40 (.643)
Highest final AP ranking: never finished in top 25
The criteria worked out perfectly to get Satterfield on this list. His winning percentage was built on Appalachian State’s first five seasons in the FBS, in which he won almost 75 percent of his games. His time at Louisville wasn’t as productive, finishing with a 25-24 record.
Even though he made the list, the truth is that Satterfield hasn’t had a season as an FBS coach in which a national championship could’ve been a legitimate goal. And now that he’s moving on to Cincinnati for the Bearcats’ move to the Big 12, he’ll probably have legitimate playoff hopes in the near future, but a national title still seems unrealistic.
Having just turned 50 years old, though, he still has plenty of opportunity for a great career.
