Sam Hartman to Notre Dame?: Landing spots for transfer QB
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (BVM) – While the NCAA transfer portal has gotten quite the influx of talent over the past month, Tuesday’s announcement that Wake Forest quarterback Sam Hartman would enter his name into the portal may have just brought one of college football’s biggest names to the table.
The Demon Deacons’ 27-17 win over Missouri in the Union Home Mortgage Gasparilla Bowl proved to be the last time the fifth–year starter will suit up for the program after making 12 starts in 2022.

With 12,967 passing yards and 110 touchdowns in his five years at Wake Forest, Hartman leaves the school as one of the most prolific passers in program history. His final stats and play over the last two seasons make the 6-foot-1 graduate transfer one of the most proven names to hit the portal this year. Following a host of quarterbacks around the country like Devin Leary, DJ Uiagalelei and JT Daniels opting to find homes elsewhere, Hartman now finds himself atop the portal list.

The ACC will look drastically different next season as Hartman becomes the seventh starting quarterback in the conference to transfer, along with Louisville’s Malik Cunningham set to head off to the NFL. The recent success at Wake Forest has correlated with the standout play from Hartman who has taken off over the last two seasons. Behind an 11-3 season in 2021, Hartman enjoyed a breakout campaign passing for over 4,000 yards and nearly 40 touchdowns. The year had set up the Demon Deacons star as an early Heisman candidate in 2022, but a “non-football related medical condition” stunted the opening of his final season with the program.
The Wake Forest quarterback returned to the 2022 season after the school announced that he had Paget-Schroetter syndrome, a blood clot that often is linked to repeated strenuous activity. Missing just the first week of the season, Hartman would go on to lead the Demon Deacons to an 8-5 record behind his 3,701 passing yards and 38 touchdowns.
With Notre Dame jumping out as the early favorite, here are some potential landing spots for the Wake Forest transfer quarterback.
