Q&A with Central Catholic basketball player Medley Schnierle

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. — Central Catholic senior Medley Schnierle will play basketball at the college level after high school. Before that, though, she looks forward making more memories with the Saints.

What is your favorite thing about being on the basketball court?

Medley Schnierle: I like the feeling of competition and going into it with my team. There is a certain rush of energy when you are on the court with all the fans in the stands cheering either for you or against you.

What do you like to do outside of your sport?

Schnierle: Spend time with my family and play games with them. I also like to hang out with my friends.

Ask someone in your family to pick one word to describe you. Who did you pick and what word did they use?

Schnierle: I asked my brother, Grayson, who’s a sophomore at CCHS. He said dedicated, because of the time I put into getting better outside of the season.

As an athlete, what is a rule you live by?

Schnierle: Always have fun on the court and remember that it’s just a game.

What jersey number do you wear?

Schnierle: No. 11. I’ve worn this number since junior high. It has always just been my go-to number and favorite number.

What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned from basketball?

Schnierle: To always give it your all 100 percent of the time, whether it’s a game or practice. Sometimes that may not be enough to win, but never feel like you didn’t give it your all.

Other than your home floor, what is your favorite gym to play in?

Schnierle: I really like playing at Shirk Center at Illinois Wesleyan University.

What has been your favorite memory on the court?

Schnierle: Our team going 3-1 in the State Farm Classic in 2021 as well as beating an undefeated highly ranked Byron team earlier this season. My favorite individual memory was making five 3-pointers in a game last season.

What has been your favorite memory off the court?

Schnierle: When we stayed in Morris during the summer for a tournament and got to share hotel rooms with our teammates.

What is your favorite meal and who makes it?

Schnierle: My mom’s tacos.

What has been your favorite class in high school?

Schnierle: English. I love getting to learn by reading different stories and watching different movies.

If you could be good at any other sport (besides basketball), which sport would it be?

Schnierle: Softball, I used to play softball and miss being with those teammates and coaches.

How did you prepare in the offseason for your senior year?

Schnierle: I spent a lot of time working out at Athlete Factory with Chad Hobbs, getting lessons with Tom Eller at the CourTTT in Heyworth and playing in Brandon Heyen’s fall league and workouts.

What movie have you watched the most?

Schnierle: I have been watching a lot of Home Alone recently.

What is your go-to restaurant in town?

Schnierle: For sure Chick-fil-A!

What food could you eat every day?

Schnierle: Pizza.

What household chore do you find satisfying?

Schnierle: Sometimes doing the laundry.

Why did you choose to commit to Lincoln Land Community College to begin your college career?

Schnierle: I chose Lincoln Land because I thought it was the perfect fit for me. Coach Jones and Coach Albert have been recruiting me since last year and are amazing. I have gotten to play and spend time with some of the current players over the summer, and it just felt like a family that I couldn’t wait to be a part of.

What will make the Saints’ season a special one?

Schnierle: To give it my all for my last year, enjoy every second of it and to help my team to some great wins!

What is the best piece of advice you received from a coach or mentor?

Schnierle: To never finish a game or practice feeling you didn’t leave it all on the floor for your team.

What is your favorite memory of playing youth sports?

Schnierle: I loved all the games and trips to fun places for AAU basketball. I also have great memories of our BNGSA In-Town softball team when I was younger.

What is your favorite part of basketball practice? Least favorite?

In 10 years, I hope to have a great career and living somewhere close to my family so I can see my parents and four siblings and their families someday.
