Q&A with the New Rochelle girls basketball captains
NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. — Take a look at the tenacious New Rochelle High School women’s basketball with captains Grace Ziogas (Junior) Guard, Olivia Fosina (Junior) Shooting Guard, Brianne Foley (Junior) Shooting Guard/Power Forward, and Rylie Rosenburg (Junior) Point Guard. All are led by head coach Donald Ross and assistant coach Joe Hardy. Before crushing their competition in a scrimmage, we had the opportunity to hear from these young minds.
Why did you choose basketball?
Grace Ziogas: I’ve been playing basketball since I was really young, my dad got me into It. I would always play with my sister. I fell in love with it.
Rylie Rosenburg: I’ve played basketball since 2nd grade, and the rest was history. It’s so much fun. My favorite part is the feeling I get from the energy in the room while playing with friends and the feeling of winning!
Brianne Foley: All my friends were into it, and I was always with my friends. I remember playing on CYO and in Ward Elementary school.
What do you do to get into a routine for basketball?
Ziogas: I think the most important thing is consistency, staying in routine every day.
Do you do extra work outside of practice?
Ziogas: Yes, I work out with my sister and at HOLY NAME High School a lot.
Rosenburg: I play with my travel team( Empire State), so that takes up a lot of my time. I also try to operate weight training 3-4 times a week.
Olivia Fosina: I’ll go to the gym, work with a trainer, or sometimes play lacrosse to practice my footwork.
Foley: Sometimes I go with my teammates to a trainer or work out with my sister or friends.
How do you balance being a student and an athlete?
Ziogas: Time management for sure, Google Classroom makes it easy too!
Fosina: I have a planner that really helps with my time.
Rosenburg: It’s all about time management, and being smart. It’s a lot between family, school, and basketball.
Foley: It’s tough. Sometimes you have to do homework before and after practice, but take time for yourself!
How do you fuel yourself before a competition?
Fosina: Definitely, I want to make sure I have protein in my system.
Rosenburg: I have type 1 diabetes, so that adds a twist to things. I try to have a heavy-carb meal before the game.
If there is anything this interviewer is impressed with, it is how mature and well-balanced these young ladies are. At a young age they understand the importance of community and time management, a few areas we can all improve in!
