Dothan Wolves softball prepares for new season
DOTHAN, Ala. — Dothan High Softball Coach Donny Bright is in his 19th year of education and has spent every year in the Dothan City School System. Bright graduated from Dale County High School where he played football and baseball. He coached has coached other sports, but has been coaching softball for 14 years first at Northview High School and now at Dothan High. He is entering his third year as the head coach of the Wolves. Coach Bright is optimistic about the upcoming season.
Last year was a rebuilding period for the team as they lost 10 players to graduation in 2021. The team was young. In fact, at the end of the season in a tournament, they started seven 7th and 8th graders. This year the team will have one senior, two sophomores, four 9th graders, four 8th graders, and one 7th grader this season.
“Our pitching staff will be a 9th grader, two 8th graders, and a 7th grader. Actually, our most experienced pitcher is 8th grader, Jada Newman. She has thrown more varsity innings than anyone else so far,” Bright said. Offensively the team has strong hitters in Newman and outfielders Maylee Lancaster and Ashlynn Sasser. Bright said their solid defensive players include Sara Harris and Kinley German. Bright called Harris their “anchor in the infield” and German a “tough return catcher”.
The Wolves will play 18 regular season games and participate in seven tournaments. Home games include:
February 23 vs Headland
28 vs. Ashford
March 2 vs. Robert E Lee
9 vs. Rehobeth
21 vs. Wicksburg
23 vs. Enterprise
24 vs. Eufaula
April 6 vs. Jeff Davis
18 vs. Prattville
All home games will be played at Dothan High School. The area tournament, regional tournament, and state tournament will be held in May.
The team motto comes from the Bible, more specifically 1 Timothy where the Apostle Paul tells Timothy “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young”. Chances seem really good that the teams youth and energy may be the very thing that adds to their success on the diamond. Bright said, “I feel like we have a good chance to make some noise and put pressure on others at the area level.” Good luck Lady Wolves!
