How did you become a swimmer?

Kevin Scroggins: I have played sports for over 10 years, finding joy in the rush of adrenaline and the thrill of working as a team towards a common goal. Soccer was the first sport I enjoyed, but I found my true passion, swimming. I started out taking swim lessons every summer for 7 years before deciding to join Trophy Club Triton Swim team. While the summer league was fun, and I got to meet some amazing people, I wanted to further my training. So I joined a year-round team called Lakeside Aquatic Club over in Keller. There I had one of my favorite coaches who pushed me to achieve things I didn’t think that I was capable of and still found ways to make practice fun. After a year, I decided to try out for the high school team, and it turned out that the high school coach was one of the club coaches I admired.

Why do you enjoy swimming?

Scroggins: Every day I wake up and question why I swim until I actually get in the water and realize that I swim not just for myself but for those around me: my teammates, my friends from other teams, and my coaches. I have made it to a statewide meet individually, but the best part of that meet was getting to swim on the relays with my team and mess around and have fun. It’s the people who surround me in swimming, the people who give it their all in every race and every yard of practice, that make the sport so enjoyable for me.

What’s your favorite subject in school?

Scroggins: When you ask a kid my age what their favorite class is, 9-out-of-10 times they will say lunch or whatever sport or fine art they do. I feel the same way. I would, however, add Chemistry to that list because, although it’s not the easiest class, I learn something interesting daily, and my teacher always keeps things engaging.

How do you stay motivated?

Scroggins: I wouldn’t be anywhere without my family and friends. They support and encourage me to be the best I can be. My parents don’t complain about waking up early to take me to practice and always attend as many meets as possible to cheer me on. They support me through good and bad times and know how to help me when I need it, and when it’s time to mess around and have fun. They remind me that the journey may be challenging, but the reward is worth each tear and every bit of pain.
