Top 10 NFL wild-card games of all time
2. 1999: Tennessee Titans 22, Buffalo Bills 16
Both the Bills and Titans came into their 1999 wild-card matchup seen as potential Super Bowl contenders, with Buffalo finishing 11-5 on the year while Tennessee went an impressive 13-3. Although this game is solely remembered for its final play, it was a good contest throughout that featured a true defensive battle. Thanks to a safety, touchdown and field goal in the first half, the Titans went into halftime with a 12-0 advantage.
However, the Bills rallied in the second half thanks to a couple of Antowain Smith rushing touchdowns, taking a 13-12 lead midway through the fourth quarter. Tennessee would then drive to get a field goal to retake a 15-13 lead with under two minutes left. But, the Bills had time to do the same, capping a 37-yard drive with a 41-yard field goal by Steve Christie who also kicked the game-winner in the Bills’ improbable comeback against the Houston Oilers in 1992. With 16 seconds left, it looked like the Titans would be out of luck. However, on the ensuing kickoff, the ball was fielded by Lorenzo Neal who handed it to tight end Frank Wycheck. Going up the right side of the field, Wycheck stopped and threw the ball across the field to Kevin Dyson who went 75 yards for the score, creating the “Music City Miracle.” The win propelled the Titans all the way to Super Bowl XXXIV where they would come up just short against the St. Louis Rams. Meanwhile, the Bills suffered another postseason heartbreak and would not make the playoffs again until 2017.
