Newport Harbor girls water polo secures TOC title
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. — In an unseasonably rainy start to the new year, sun shined on the Newport Harbor Sailors as the girls’ water polo team competed in the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions. When the rain let up the Sailors had an unexpected turnabout game with a 13-11 win over Laguna Beach at the Tournament of Champions held on Saturday January 14th at Santa Barbara High.
Previously, the Sailors won six CIF Southern Section titles, but they made history Saturday with their unexpected win. Junior Ryan Chalupnik scored five goals with the Sailors winning at 15-3 and securing a TOC title. Senior goalkeeper Anna Reed was named the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions MVP with 10 saves in the winning game.
While all wins are important, this win is incredibly inspiring for the Sailors as they move through the season. Stay tuned for more sun shining on the Sailors as they continue to reach new heights in upcoming games.
