How long have you been coaching?

Eric Bendig: 15 years total, 6 years as head coach of Philip Simmons.

What is your background in this sport?

Bendig: I played football all my life growing up and all through high school. I was fortunate to receive a scholarship to play football in college for Presbyterian College in Clinton, SC. After college I decided to follow my love for football into coaching.

What are one or two things that the team does in training that are keys to their success?

Bendig: We put a huge value on training our athletes year round for not just football but for life and also other sports they may play. Every sport needs players that are big, strong, explosive, and fast. We use cutting edge technology and techniques to make sure our players are trained the best possible way for their body type and age.

Describe the most memorable games/tournaments/championships your team has won.

Bendig: We were fortunate to win the region championship in 2021 and the game was a thriller against our rival Timberland.

How do you encourage the team after a disappointing loss?

Bendig: You have to find the good in a loss and build off of it, while also seeing what didn’t work well and working to perfect that aspect of our program. We are always evaluating how we can get better in every facet of this program!

Describe your proudest coaching moment.

Bendig: The proudest moments I have as a coach are when I see a player that has been in our program being exceptional as a human being, man, husband, father, etc. Those are the things I love to see and am most proud of being a part.

What is the biggest life lesson you’ve learned from being a coach?

Bendig: You can always work to win every day in what you do. Being a good worker, win the day at it. Being a good husband/father, win the day at it. If you have a bad day… look forward to attacking the next day. Start stacking winning days and you will succeed in life.

What legacy do you hope to leave as a coach?

Bendig: I hope that when you ask our players who have graduated and gone on in their walk of life about being coached by me that they say I helped bring out the best in them and helped make them a better person in their walk of life. I hope they loved their experience and they always feel welcome back here at Philip Simmons.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?

Bendig: We pride ourselves on being an elite program from top to bottom. Philip Simmons High School Football strives to be the best in the state of South Carolina. From academics, athletics, personal and social growth, leadership training, and football training… we strive to be the best. I think our results speak for themselves when you compare us to others in the area. Go Horses!
