Brey has been Notre Dame’s head coach since the 2000-01 season and his 481 wins with the Fighting Irish are the most in school history. The 2011 AP Coach of the Year led the Irish to the NCAA Tournament 13 times, earning 15 victories along the way which is tied for the most in program history.
“It has been a great run for me and our program over the past two decades, but it is time for a new voice to lead this group into the future,” Brey said in a press release. “I want to thank our student-athletes, assistant coaches and support staff who have played such a key role in the culture we have created.”
Brey is a three-time Big East Coach of the Year (2007, 2008, 2011) and finished his Big East tenure as the conference’s fourth all-time winningest coach (146 wins). Arguably the greatest men’s basketball coach in Notre Dame history has coached six All-Americans, three conference players of the year and 26 different all-conference selections.
Brey stepping down marks a new era for Notre Dame men’s basketball, but who will lead it? Here are the top five names to replace Brey as Notre Dame’s next head coach.
From Fr. Malloy hiring me, to @FatherJenkinsND’s guidance & @NotreDameAD's friendship, I'll leave @NotreDame with gratitude to the University and I’m proud of all we’ve accomplished together.
