Swan Valley poms team looks to end of season competition

SAGINAW, Mich. — There is one athletic squad at Swan Valley that may get overlooked sometimes, but they will not be outworked. The Swan Valley Varsity Poms Team is rolling towards the end of another successful season.  The “Pommers” are hard at work most every day after school.  There are many hours of practice that go into a seemingly short halftime routine.  Song selection, choreography, and team unity are all worked on during a given week of practice.

There are a total of seven Senior Pommers this season.  The captains are Ava Schiebner, Carley Lietzke, and Hannah Fogg.  Ava and Hannah have been involved in poms for seven years.  Carley has been a member of the Middle and High School Poms Teams for six years.  So far this season, the Poms Team has gone to camp and a high kick competition where they placed third in the Small Varsity Division.  They also performed at all home Varsity Football games and halftimes.

We asked the seniors a variety of questions.  The first person we interviewed was Hannah Fogg.  We asked what she would miss most about the sport.  She said she loves having a bonded team who works together towards the same goal.  Hannah also says she’s going to miss spending time every day with her team and the feeling of excitement the night before competitions. The excitement the team shares when they are about to perform shows the love they have for the sport.

Stella Adams has been on the Middle and High School Poms Teams over seven years and has always tried her best to make a positive impact on her team.  She expressed, “My favorite thing about Swan Valley Poms is how much we push ourselves to our limit.  We see our potential and we do everything in our power to reach it.”  Stella is going to miss the feeling she gets at the end of every practice when she and her team get in a circle and tell one another how proud they are of each other.

The Poms Team loves performing at their yearly high kick competition, but nothing could beat performing in the rain at the football games for Tayla Slaybaugh.  She continues to say it felt like a movie.  Furthermore, she admitted she will miss the adrenaline before competition.

Ava Lewis is determined to make her last year the best.  She says her fondest memories overall were the camps she attended.   Ava regrets not trying out her junior year because she could have made more memories.

Carley Lietzke is a team captain and said that one thing she is going to miss is leading, including the chants.  She exclaimed she will forever be thankful for all the friendships and memories that have been created during her time on poms. In addition, she is very grateful to her coach for leading the team to victory.

The Swan Valley Varsity Poms Team’s 2023 state competition will be held on Sunday, February 12th at Eastern Michigan University.  Come out and support these Lady Vikings who have been hard at work all year long!
