Ranking the top 5 offensive coordinator candidates for Notre Dame
5. Charlie Weis Jr., Ole Miss co-offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach
The Weis name is quite familiar around Notre Dame, as Charlie Weis Sr. was the head coach of the Fighting Irish from 2005-09, coming to South Bend after being part of the Patriots’ Super Bowl-winning staff. Weis Sr.’s tenure started hot and ended slowly, but now, Notre Dame could have another Weis on the sidelines. That would be Weis Sr.’s son, Charlie Weis Jr., who has been following in his dad’s footsteps for quite some time, even working on his staff by holding up cards for the offense on the sidelines when he was a kid during his father’s stint at Notre Dame. From there, Weis Jr. got a job as offensive quality control coach at Florida when he was just 18 years old, again working for his father. He later followed Weis Sr. to Kansas as an undergraduate team manager.
Shortly after, Weis Jr. became an offensive assistant on Nick Saban’s staff at Alabama working alongside Lane Kiffin, and followed Crimson Tide coaching staff member Steve Sarkisian to serve in the same role at the NFL level with the Atlanta Falcons. Weis Jr. got his first offensive coordinator job under Kiffin at Florida Atlantic in 2018, and served in the same role in 2020 and 2021 at South Florida. In 2022, the 29-year-old rejoined Kiffin’s staff at Ole Miss as co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. A move to the same role at Notre Dame would bring Weis Jr.’s young coaching career full circle, and his experience working with some of college football’s biggest names at such a young age makes him an intriguing candidate.
