Centerville cheer squads prepare for National HS Cheerleading Championships
DAYTON, Ohio — The Centerville High School (CHS) competition and gameday cheer squads are made up of freshman through senior athletes.
The competition squads practice from Jun. through Feb. They attend many local competitions and will be heading to the National High School Cheerleading Championships at Walt Disney World Resorts in Orlando, Florida. Our competition squad is made up of athletes with high-level tumbling; they put in extra practices during the week at tumbling classes.
Our gameday squad is an energetic, traditional cheer squad, representing what you would see at a college football gameday. Each girl who is part of the competition squads is also a sideline cheerleader for football or basketball.
Being a competition cheerleader is a yearlong commitment.
CHS senior Shelby Kerr has been a part of Centerville Cheerleading for 13 years. “I love being a part of the gameday and competition squads, because of the competitive aspect,” she said. “Centerville Cheerleading is so competitive, when it comes to the routine and doing the best we can. When competing, every motion, facial expression and execution of skill must be perfect, in order to ‘hit’ the routine.
“I love the aspect of close competition, because it is what drives me to do better each week,” Shelby continued. “The team’s dedication and hard work to continuously get better has shown.”
It is amazing to see the hard work that these girls put into their season. It takes a lot of athleticism and talent to be a part of this program. Each year I see girls strive and work toward their goals. I love seeing their faces, when a new skill is achieved. They all support and encourage each other so much at practice. It is a special group of athletes.
The squads are coached by CHS alumnae EV Kuzma and Alex Feldmeyer, who put a lot of time and effort into making this team what it is.
