SEC’s top 10 basketball players with month left in season
Honorable mention
Anthony Black, G, Arkansas
Despite dealing with some significant injuries, Arkansas has remained in the middle of the pack in the SEC and squarely in the NCAA Tournament hunt. A big reason why is the play of the Razorbacks’ terrific freshman guard, Black, who averages 12.8 points, 5.3 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 1.9 steals.
Wendell Green Jr., G, Auburn
Green Jr. is hard to leave off the top 10 as he leads Auburn in both points per game (13.9) and assists (4.4), and is also a good defender as he averages 1.7 steals. He and Johni Broome have formed a nice duo that has Auburn in the top half of the SEC standings.
D’Moi Hodge, G, Missouri
Alongside Kobe Brown, Hodge has come over from Cleveland State to put up solid numbers for a Mizzou team that has exceeded expectations thus far. On the year, he is averaging 14.1 points and 3.9 rebounds while also leading the team in steals (2.5) and blocks (0.5).
Matthew Murell, G, Ole Miss
Ole Miss has struggled through most of the season, but one of the bright spots for the Rebels has been the play of Murrell, who leads the team in points (14.6) and assists (2.6). The 6-foot-4 junior guard has six games of 20 or more points this season.
Terry Roberts, G, Georgia
Georgia is in the bottom half of the SEC standings, but the Bulldogs have held their own through much of the season in part thanks to Roberts. The 6-foot-3 guard is eighth in the conference scoring 15 points per game, and also averages four rebounds, 4.2 assists and 1.7 steals.
Tolu Smith, F, Mississippi State
Following Roberts on the SEC scoring list is Smith, who sits in ninth at 14.7 points per game. The 6-foot-11 senior also averages a team-high 8.3 rebounds for a Mississippi State squad that has struggled in SEC play, but is 16-8 overall with wins over Marquette and TCU on its resume.
Santiago Vescovi, G, Tennessee
Tennessee’s success is based on the fact that they have multiple key contributors, but Vescovi is the consistent veteran presence that makes them dangerous. The guard leads the team averaging 12 points per game, and also averages two steals as a strong defender.
Cason Wallace, G, Kentucky
Oscar Tshiebwe gets the headlines for the Wildcats, and Brandon Miller gets the limelight when it comes to freshmen in the SEC, but Cason Wallace has quietly had a strong first season in Lexington. On the year, Wallace averages 12.3 points, 3.6 rebounds, 3.6 assists and two steals while shooting over 40% from deep.
