Newport Harbor boys basketball sweeps Battle of the Bay
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. — The Battle of the Bay games between Newport Harbor High School and Corona del Mar High School are always much anticipated, regardless of the sport. This season, the boys’ basketball games favored Newport Harbor.
First, on January 18, 2023, the Wave League cross-town teams matched up at Newport Harbor High School. With a packed crowd and plenty of support from the student section, Harbor controlled the game against their rivals, coming up with a 56-35 win.
The Sailors led by as many as 13 points in the first half, but the lead was cut when Cdm senior Jack Loucks scored five points, making it 24-16 at half-time.
Stand-out senior player Adam Gaa led all scorers with 14 points and seven rebounds. His back-to-back dunks in the second half electrified the home crowd. Other notable contributors included Junior forwards Riggs Guy and Dash Bastedo, scoring 11 points, Sophomore guard Jack Berry with 10 points, and guard Isaac Davis with 7 points and 5 assists.
The Sea Kings were never really in the game, unable to match the length and athleticism of the Sailors. Coach Simco was noted as saying he felt his team was outworked. The Sailors nearly shut down CdM senior standout guard Ilan Agranovich who ended up with just six points.
The second match-up between these rivals happened on February 2, 2023, at Corona del Mar High School. This was the Sea Kings’ opportunity to answer back, but the Sailors proved to be too much to handle and were victorious with a score of 56-41. The Sailors ended their regular season as the Wave League champions with a 6-0 record.
