NASCAR Cup Series’ best by car number: 20-29
No. 29 (1949-2013)
The cars that have featured numbers in the 20s throughout NASCAR’s history have seen many legendary drivers, and the No. 29 is a fitting conclusion to that. After being introduced in 1949, the number saw its first victories courtesy of Nelson Stacy in the early 1960s. It was the back half of that decade that was more notable for the car, though, as Dick Hutcherson drove the No. 29 to 13 wins. A few notable drivers like Bobby Allison, Cale Yarborough and Dale Jarrett would also take their turn with the No. 29 in the ensuing decades.
However, the number was made famous by one man: Kevin Harvick. In 2001, Harvick brought out the No. 29 Chevrolet for the first time unexpectedly following Dale Earnhardt Sr.’s death at the Daytona 500. Just weeks later, Harvick won his first career Cup Series race in Atlanta, beating Jeff Gordon by just 0.006 seconds. It was an emotional start to a legendary run by Harvick, who scored another career highlight by winning the Daytona 500 in the No. 29 in 2007, a victory which was again a close call as he beat Mark Martin by just 0.02 seconds. Although Harvick, who is in his final season of full-time Cup Series racing in 2023, won his two Cup Series titles with Stewart-Haas Racing in the No. 4, he earned an impressive 23 wins in the No. 29 car for Hendrick Motorsports. The number has not been used since Harvick was last in it in 2013.
