NASCAR Cup Series’ best by car number: 20-29

No. 20 (1949-present)

The No. 20 car has been one of the most infamous in NASCAR over the past few decades, and was first driven by the likes of Don Rogala, Dick Linder and H.F. Stickleather in 1949. The first time the number got to victory lane was in 1961 thanks to Marvin Panch. Clyde Lynn became a staple in the No. 20 car by the late 1960s, but the number changed hands a bit throughout the ensuing decades. The No. 20 would not see a win again until the late ‘90s, when a young Tony Stewart took over the number as part of Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) in 1999. Stewart would go on to win two Cup Series championships in the Home Depot-sponsored car, as well as 33 races.

By 2009, the No. 20 was represented by a young Joey Logano. Since, the number has been driven by Matt Kenseth during the back half of his NASCAR career, as well as a budding star in Erik Jones. Currently, the car remains a featured one for JGR, with Christopher Bell set to man the No. 20 for the third straight year in 2023. Overall, the number has seen 522 top-10 finishes and 57 victories.
