NASCAR Cup Series’ best by car number: 20-29
No. 22 (1949-present)
The No. 22 car was one of the most successful right off the bat as Red Byron drove it to two wins in 1949 as the first NASCAR Strictly Stock Series champion. Those would be the last victories for the No. 22 until it was taken over by Fireball Roberts, who earned 30 victories in the car during the late 1950s and early ‘60s. Bobby Allison would see a couple of successful seasons repping the number in the years to follow, and would take over the car again in the ‘80s, winning a championship in 1983. The likes of Sterling Martin, Bobby Labonte and Ward Burton were other notable names to drive the No. 22 throughout the next couple of decades.
However, the car has been turned into a true winner over the past decade by Joey Logano, who has brought home 29 wins since taking over the No. 22 Shell/Pennzoil Ford for Penske Racing. Logano will remain in the car for 2023 where he will look to repeat as Cup Series champion, a feat he also accomplished in the No. 22 in 2018 in addition to last season. Overall, the number has seen 669 top-10s and 87 wins over its rich history.
