NASCAR Cup Series’ best by car number: 60-69
No. 66 (1950-2022)
Compared to the No. 65, the No. 66 has seen significantly more action with 805 races all time. It has also been used more recently, as Boris Said made an appearance in the No. 66 Ford Mustang last season in his first Cup Series race since 2017. Prior to that, the No. 66 had been driven each year from 2017-21 by Timmy Hill, who ran 36 races in the car in 2020. Pappy Hough, Herschel Buchanan and Gene Austin were the first drivers of the No. 66 in 1950, with Hough earning two top-10s that year. Bud Riley would repeat that feat in 1951, with Donald Thomas earning three top-10 finishes a year later.
A few others would see similar results until Larry Frank came along in 1962, placing in the top 10 seven times and earning the number’s lone Cup Series victory. Lake Speed and Phil Parsons would see some success in the No. 66 over the next couple of decades, with other notable drivers of the number being Dick Trickle in the early 1990s, and Darrell Waltrip later that decade. Jeff Green also saw mild success in the car before giving way to the likes of Dave Blaney and Michael McDowell. Overall, the No. 66 has seen 11 top-five and 59 top-10 finishes.
