Middletown alum Dell Ahalt inducted into Alvin G. Quinn Sports Hall of Fame

MIDDLETOWN, Md. — Middletown High School 1985 graduate Dell Ahalt was a skilled and successful baseball player for MHS in the 1980’s, playing all four years on the varsity baseball team. Dell was recently selected as a member of the YMCA of Frederick County’s Alvin G. Quinn Sports Hall of Fame and was recognized at a ceremony this past Jan. 28. He said he was “humbled and honored” to be chosen.

In high school, Dell accumulated numerous baseball awards for excellence, including three-time All-MVAL and the Frederick News-Post 1st and 2nd team honors. In his senior year, he was chosen to the Maryland All-State baseball team after hitting .500 and going 6-1 as a pitcher. Dell helped MHS finish as a state runner-up in 1983. He also played in the 16-18-year-old Babe Ruth World Series in Frederick.

Dell earned a full scholarship to North Carolina State University, where he majored in communications and led the Wolfpack in the ACC. He was named to the ACC 1st Team in 1988 and batted .346 with 14 home runs his junior year. He was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in 1988 and played for the Erie Orioles and Frederick Keys.

After his professional baseball career, Dell earned a living as a manager for Verizon Telecommunications, and worked as a player/coach for the Hagerstown Braves semi-pro team and led them to three Franklin County League titles.

Dell had a lifetime average of .404 and was named tournament MVP on two occasions. In 2022, he was inducted into the National Semi-Pro Baseball Hall of Fame.

Dell lives in Woodsboro with his wife Michelle. His daughter Lauren works at the Navy yard, and her husband Tayler Stiles works for NV Homes as a project manager; they have a daughter Serena. Dell’s son Brett is on a baseball scholarship at High Point University.
