D-I schools with men’s basketball and football national titles
Michigan State (four football, two basketball)
With six national titles between both sports, the Spartans have the most combined national championships among DI schools. In football, Michigan State was the consensus national champion in 1952 before splitting the title in 1965 and 1966.
For basketball, the Spartans won national titles in both 1979 and 2000. The programs have gotten close to national championships in both sports again in recent years with the Spartans football team making it to the CFP semifinals in 2015 while the basketball team made it back to the NCAA tournament national title game in 2009.
