Get to know RINK Hockey Academy Kelowna player Emy McDermid

KELOWNA, British Columbia — The modern form of ice hockey began in Canada in the late 19th century, and is Canada’s National pastime, with high levels of participation by children, men and women at various levels of competition.

In the early days of hockey, Emy McDermid played Atom I and Peewee AA on boy’s teams. She made her way playing to girls teams with the Olds Bantam AA team. She lead her team to win Provincials and she was named the league MVP that year. She now plays for RINK Hockey Academy Kelowna in the Canadian Sport School Hockey League (CSSHL). RINK Hockey Academy, where they believe in developing “Skills for Hockey and Values for Life.”

She has been involved with hockey for 10 years and also has participated in soccer, gymnastics, dance, track & Field, and basketball.

Emy attends George Elliot Secondary School, which is the highest ranked academy public high school in BC by the Fraser Institute and will graduate in 2025.

Unfortunately, at the time of this writing, the Canada Winter Games were not underway . However, Emy was a representative of Team AB at the Canada Winter Games held in Prince Edward Island, Feb 17-Mar 6.

Her personal goal is to play for Team Canada and play NCAA Division 1 at university, in the United States.

Emy’s love for hockey comes from distinct reasons. One of them is the competition, growing up with three siblings, there was an obvious competition between themselves, especially in Sports. She loved and still loves all that competition. Another reason for her love for hockey is, the people she gets to meet along the way.

Sharing with each other the love of the sport makes some great conversation and connections. Emy also loves the feeling each time she steps onto the ice, “it’s a new day, a new practice, a new game and I am instantly happy. If I am having a bad day, I forget about everything the minute I get on the ice.”

For her pre-game routine, Emy and Raedyn, one of Emy’s teammates, listen to the same song as they walk into the arena. She also participates in a pregame cheer/dance with other teammates Chloe and Jaimee. They go to the exact same spots around the net, do a cheer and as they leave Chloe and Emy share a secret message between themselves..

The best pieces of advice Emy has received “don’t practice until you get it right, practice until you can’t get it wrong” and “the process of growing should be fun, not exhausting, that’s the important part.”

Emy wants to send a special thanks to all her past and present coaches, they recognized her potential and pushed her to achieve it.

Outside of hockey, Emy enjoys skiing, wake surfing, playing with her dogs, going to the mall and hanging out with friends and family (especially playing cards and board games).

Hoping you had the best of luck at the Canada Winter Games, Emy and of course your continued success on progressing towards your goals of playing for Team Canada and in the NCAA Division 1.
