Top 5 NL breakout candidates for the 2023 MLB season
2. Hunter Greene, RHP, Cincinnati Reds
The gem of the Reds’ prospect pool made his arrival to the MLB last season and quickly showcased what people had raved about for some time. With an impressive fastball that touches over 100 mph, the 6-foot-5, 242-pound second overall pick gave Cincinnati just the bump it needed in 2022 during the team’s retooling season. Greene pitched to a 4.44 ERA in 125.2 innings and will have an opportunity to find his groove on the mound during his sophomore campaign. Behind a 164-48 strikeout-to-walk ratio, Greene quickly impressed with his ability to keep opposing batters off the bases. But, the Reds pitcher did have one of the higher home run rates, ranking second to last with a 1.72 HR/9. If Greene can keep the ball out of the air, he should be in for an All-Star caliber season.
