Downingtown West football player Cooper Young commits to WVU

DOWNINGTOWN, Pa. — Downingtown West senior #54, Cooper Young, took his football coaches’ advice by living in the moment and enjoying his time as a high school player while looking forward to his next steps. Cooper has committed to play collegiate football for West Virginia University.

Cooper began playing flag football at USTC when he was in kindergarten. His parents, Melanie and Taylor, didn’t want him to play tackle football yet, but he was happy doing flag to be with his friends. He continued to play other sports, including baseball, golfing, fishing and racquets, and he started to focus on football once he entered middle school. Cooper applied himself by lifting weights, working on speed training, and adapting the skills he learned by playing multiple sports. He earned a place on the All-ChesMont teams for football and baseball during high school, and in 2019, he was part of the Downingtown West Whippets team that won the District 1 Championship.

When looking at his options to continue his athletic career in college, he decided to pursue football. He had many universities prospecting to have him play on their team. While the recruitment process had stressful moments, he enjoyed meeting new people and visiting cool places. Ultimately, he chose West Virginia University after three visits because he could envision himself succeeding there. “I love the coaches and the resources they have. The academic programs at WVU for athletes are top-notch. They are also a great Power 5 football program, and the players were awesome to meet.” Cooper hopes to stay healthy during his time as a Mountaineer, do a great job for the team, and advance his football career to play in the NFL. When asked if he has advice for anyone going through the sports recruitment process now that he has completed his, Cooper shared, “Live in the moment and enjoy it. It is also important to ask lots of questions and keep an open mind.”

Humbly, Cooper credits sports for imparting the values of working hard and fighting through adversity, but utmost to him is gratitude. He knows the friends made through athletics and school help him deal with the highs and lows. He is close to his extended family, his parents, and siblings, Abby and Bowen, who he says always provide him with the best support. “They are all pretty special,” Cooper acknowledges first, more than any other of his great athletic accomplishments. It’s an example of his character attributes that make those who know him even happier for his success.
