Meet CYFA Sequoyah Chiefs youth football player Tripp Upchurch
CANTON, Ga. — Tripp Upchurch is a multi-sport athlete, participating in football, baseball and basketball. He is 11 years old and in the 5th grade at Hickory Flat Elementary School. Tripp began playing football in kindergarten and is excited to get started with the middle school team, Jr Sequoyah Chiefs. He served as quarterback for the CYFA Sequoyah Chiefs 5th-grade football team during the Fall 2022 season, where his team made it to the final round of playoffs. Tripp has played baseball since Fall of 2016 while in preschool and is currently a travel team member with the Ninth Inning Blue Jays. And he has played basketball with the Hickory Flat Thunderbirds through Cherokee Youth Basketball since kindergarten.
When describing Tripp, CYFA Sequoyah Chiefs football coach Jason Van Vacter says, “He is my QB for football, plays baseball on a really good travel team and is one heck of a basketball player. More importantly, he is smart and excels in school, one of the most coachable kids I have, a leader among his peers, and comes from a great family in the community.”
Tripp’s goal is to be a quarterback in the NFL. He loves everything about football especially and particularly enjoys the feeling after making a touchdown. His pregame ritual consists of watching YouTube highlight reels of Ray Louis and Michael Jordan.
Tripp finds that his biggest challenge is managing schoolwork with his practice schedules, and he keeps a calendar to make sure all his responsibilities are met. Some of the best advice he has ever been given is “our mistakes have a short memory” and “always look toward the next play.”
Another piece of advice given to him by his coaches is “success is achieved through calm and confidence” and Tripp had a chance to put this into action when there was a fumble on a hand off to the running back where the ball was almost recovered by the other team. Luckily, he stayed calm and he was able to scoop it up and run for a touchdown.
For Tripp, “Being part of a great team takes more than just skill. My teammates and I have to be accountable to each other.”
When not playing a sport, Tripp spends his time playing video games, working out or reading.
