Parksville Volleyball Club develops Oceanside area youth
PARKSVILLE, British Columbia — Anyone that has graced the gym at Ballenas Secondary School may have noticed the banners hanging overhead. What may not be known is that woven within the fabric of these banners are fond memories of Ballenas volleyball teams dominating in the province. The Parksville Volleyball Club (PVC), a non-profit organization devoted to the development of youth volleyball in the Oceanside area, has been a cornerstone of the success garnered by the teams during this period.
The inception of the club was built upon the grass roots element of volunteerism and community development that brought forth those passionate for the game of volleyball. Today, the Parksville Volleyball Club still holds tight to these early beginnings of club volleyball. It is powered solely by volunteerism of the executive team, the coaches, and the parents to keep the momentum going. With visions of encapsulating the genre of those banners once again, the club experiences challenges and successes each season.
In 2020, the momentum was building towards this vision but was unfortunately cut short due to the covid disruptions. Last season, there was a tentative hope at the beginning of the season that maybe, just maybe, we would have a season. Initially we had planned for game play to be among the club teams only, as attending external tournaments with other clubs and even attending the Provincials seemed to be too lofty of a goal.
The club stood steadfast in its vision to offer as many seats as possible to players that wanted to play volleyball. The club executive, coaches and players persevered to run with three competitive teams, in addition to the Train and Play program. The spirit of the club was not defeated and, in the end, we kept our foothold of keeping the club viable.
The club executive, in tandem with the parents and athletes, remained steadfast in the pursuit to market the Parksville Volleyball Club and focused our efforts on upgrading the website and updating the PVC jerseys, which were funded by some of our corporate sponsors. We would like to thank the Seaside Cruisers, GEM Real Estate Group, Ocean’s Edge Orthodontics, Bayside Construction, Nanoose Bay Lions Club and a private donor for their incredible generosity, for without these community stakeholders the club would not have been able to achieve these goals this past season.
We currently offer a Train and Play program (grades 6 and 7) and Competitive team opportunities (14U -18U) for girls in Oceanside and the surrounding communities. There is community interest to expand the program to include a boys program, however we need to significantly expand the coaching talent of the club in order to meet these demands.
Parksville Volleyball Club is a small but mighty club, led by a dedicated group of three directors and a small contingent of coaches. We are actively seeking volunteer coaches and welcome the continued support of corporate sponsors to ensure that we keep the sport of volleyball accessible to all players that desire to play under the banner of PVC in our community.
