Steamboat Tennis and Pickleball Center continues expansion project
STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. — The Steamboat Tennis and Pickleball Center (STPC) is bursting at the seams with more than 7,000 people playing tennis and pickleball nearly 70,000 times each year. Just like in the movie “Field of Dreams,” people from all over the world are lined up to enjoy the sports and other activities that make STPC a recreational hub for family and friends.

To accommodate the ever-growing community need, STPC has embarked on an $11 million expansion project to renovate six of the aging outdoor tennis courts, “rightsize” the outdoor pickleball courts, build 12 new pickleball courts to be enclosed in a 35,000-square foot building, add parking and improve social gathering spaces. Funded through individual donations, grants, corporate sponsorships and a loan, less than $800,000 remains to be raised.
Construction began last summer. Prior to construction, STPC’s facilities included six indoor tennis courts (with two used for eight pickleball courts in the winter), eight outdoor tennis courts and eight outdoor pickleball courts. Phase 1 is nearly complete and includes all the “horizontal” ground level work of excavation, electrical and drainage work, creating or rebuilding all of the new pickleball and tennis courts and expanding the parking lot. Phase 2, scheduled to begin in March 2023, includes the “vertical” work of constructing the steel building (which has been ordered) to cover the 12 new pickleball courts. The building’s Welcome Center will include a pro shop, locker rooms, office and meeting spaces, mezzanine viewing and social gathering areas. STPC’s goal is to hold a Grand Opening of the new Pickleball Center with 12 dedicated indoor pickleball courts as early as the winter of 2023-2024.

Summer Fun for Everyone
STPC’s activities are for all ages. We have summer camps for kids ages 3-15 that feature tennis and pickleball instruction, arts and crafts, indoor and outdoor games, snacks and more. The camps sell out quickly, so be sure and sign up quickly.
STPC has summer fun for the kid inside all of us too! We organize tennis and pickleball leagues, open play and drills for players of all abilities, and we offer tournaments that draw players from all over the region. Rare Air tennis and pickleball camps and clinics taught by top world players are a popular offering as well. STPC also hosts fun socials and teaching certification workshops.
Causes That Matter
STPC partners with the Steamboat Tennis Association, the Steamboat Springs Pickleball Association and other organizations to support a number of Routt County nonprofits and initiatives. Our collaborations provide free court time and reduced instruction fees to groups such as the Boys and Girls Clubs, under-resourced youth and children with special needs, grade schools from all over the county and high school physical education classes and tennis teams. We also work with organizations like Stop Alzheimer’s Now and Play It Forward to increase awareness of issues such as dementia and rare cancer. We care about our community, and we feel honored to use the sports we love to support causes that matter.
Our vision states the following: “The Steamboat Tennis and Pickleball Center is nationally acclaimed as a public recreational treasure for its facilities and programs. A new Pickleball Center and upgraded Tennis Center will provide everyone more ways to enjoy quality recreation with family and friends, leading to improved mental and physical health, increased sense of community and, of course, fun!”
We’re building more than a facility – we’re building community. We offer something for everyone, and we hope to see you on the courts soon.
