Kootenai Girls Softball Association welcomes all area athletes
COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho — Where do girls in North Idaho go to learn the game of softball? There is no softball offered through the school districts, so the option available to them is Kootenai Girls Softball Association (KGSA). Girls from ages 5 to 14 compete in this open to all levels of play league. KGSA is a volunteer-led organization that promotes a fun and positive learning environment for these young ladies. The only paid positions are the umpires who keep the games going. There are 5 divisions offered to players 6-under, 8-under, 10-under, 12-under and varsity divisions. Athletes are evaluated during a skills day where they are assessed and categorized so when teams are put together, they can be as evenly balanced as possible.
KGSA season in anywhere from 1-2 games a week with 1-2 practices a week depending on availability. The focus is on the development of skills so that each girl can advance to the next level of play. Many of the girls who play KGSA also play on club or travel teams. KGSA is closely aligned when it comes to rules with USA Softball, making it very easy for girls to transition from KGSA to the higher-level competitive USA Travel tournaments.
KGSA keeps their fees very low so that all kids interested can learn the great game of softball. Coaches volunteer their time for these teams, again with the girls solely in mind. All coaches are background checked, SafeSport and ACE certified, which are also requirements of USA Softball. This process ensures the mental and physical well-being of all the girls involved.
The goal of KGSA softball is to fan the flames of passion for the game of softball in North Idaho. Based on the number of girls that are competing every year, they are doing a stand-up job of making a sport a fun and positive learning environment for these girls. You can catch a game at Finucane Park and area fields most any night Monday – Thursday. The season ends with a tournament the weekend before Memorial Day.
