5 Big 12 freshmen softball players turning heads in 2023
3. Viviana Martinez, SS/2B, Texas
One of the strongest hitters in the league, Martinez holds a .353 batting average in 153 at-bats in 49 games. She has 54 hits, 40 RBIs, three home runs and only 12 strikeouts all season. Her 40 RBIs rank her fifth in the conference. An Arizona native, Martinez was ranked as the No. 1 infielder and No. 3 overall in Extra Inning Softball’s Class of 2022 Player Rankings as well as No. 7 overall in Softball America’s 2022 Top 100 Recruiting Rankings. She was also tabbed by NCAA.com as one of its “Top 55 Freshman to Know” entering the 2023 campaign.
Reese Atwood, Leighann Goode, Viviana Martinez and Ashton Maloney (a redshirt freshman who didn’t play at all in 2022) have accounted for 44.7 percent of Texas’ total bases this season.
