Weston Wildcats boys tennis defeats Newton South Lions

WESTON, Mass. — Another day, another win for the Weston Wildcats Boys Tennis team (14-0), who took down the Newton South Lions 5-0 in a rout.

Due to an injury to Noah Gilligan, Max Ding played one singles against Newton South and won a quick match 6-0, 6-0. Ding has been improving match after match this entire season, and today was the latest example of this. The biggest improvement Ding has made to his game is his ability to take control over the point with a blistering forehand pressure shot. If his opponent gives him a weaker ball in the middle of the court, Ding will use his forehand and catch his opponent off balance. Overall, Ding has been one of Weston’s most reliable players this season and has looked great in his recent matches.

Zach Regelman started at two singles today and won 6-1, 6-1 in a relatively quick match. Regelman does a very good job of hitting volleys to win points, and his moving to net, which has increased over the season, has allowed him to win more points. Regelman did a nice job of mixing in faster groundstrokes with slices during this match, which made it hard for his opponent to gain any sort of rhythm. In general, Regelman played a very strong match and looks great going into playoff season.

One doubles won 6-0, 6-1 today with Peter Chen and Winston Starrett dominating their Newton South opponents. Chen and Starrett have been working hard recently on moving to net to attack weak balls in the middle of the court and certainly did an excellent job of that during the match. Furthermore, Chen and Starrett served and returned exceptionally well, which made the match a tough one for their opponents. Overall, Chen and Starrett have been absolutely spectacular all season long and continue to dominate their competition.

Two doubles also had a very strong victory today, winning 6-1, 6-0. Zunian Luo and Claus Hinck are starting to find their groove at second doubles, stringing together a few strong victories in a row. The Newton South match was arguably their best match of the season as they both looked very good at net, and both did an excellent job of poaching balls across the middle of the court. Hinck and Luo also are improving a lot on their returns, which allows them to play a lot more points and win some of them. It was a great day on the court for both of them as it seems like they are really comfortable where they are playing now.

Finally, Alex Ko took home a big victory at three singles, winning 7-6(8-6), 6-1. The first set was very tight with Ko and his opponent trading points and games. Ko came back from an early deficit to tie the set at 5-5. After each player held, the set went to a tiebreaker. Ko was down for nearly the entire tiebreaker, finding himself down 6-4 with his opponent having two set points. Ko then won the next four points, saving both set points, winning the set in an impressive fashion. The second set was much more dominating for Ko as he was able to completely break down his opponent’s game. While the points were still competitive, Ko found himself winning a higher percentage of the points than he originally was. With Noah Gilligan likely out for the rest of the season, Ko will have to step up at third singles for the Wildcats and get that important point at third singles.

Weston continues their undefeated season winning their fourteenth straight match with two left in the regular season.
