Top 5 drivers who could win the 2023 Indy 500
4. Josef Newgarden
Newgarden has yet to claim an Indy 500 win, but if he can this weekend, he would become the fifth American driver to do so since 2000, joining the likes of Alexander Rossi (2016), Ryan Hunter-Reay (2014), Sam Hornish Jr. (2006) and Buddy Rice (2004). While the 32-year-old Tennessee native is not necessarily one of the betting favorites to win this year’s race, he should not be overlooked. Newgarden’s best finish is third in nearly a dozen starts at the Indy 500, but he finished sixth in 2021, and fifth last year, continuing to gain more and more experience on the track. That, combined with a solid start to the 2023 season in which he has won one race, earned three top 10s and sits sixth in the point standings, makes the driver of the Team Penske No. 2 Chevrolet a legitimate threat to win this weekend.
