Meet Ardrey Kell soccer player Claire Smith
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — We caught up with Ardrey Kell’s varsity soccer player Claire Smith to hear a little bit about her experience and what’s next for her.
Years in current sport:13
Year: Senior
What are your personal goals within your sport/athletic dreams?
Claire Smith: Our team competed in the 4A state championship last year but fell short after double overtime and PK’s. As a senior on the same team, I am hopeful that our team will make it to the championship again this year and win the state title. Another goal I have is to help prepare the next generation of AK soccer players for success by helping coach and mentor the newer girls on the team.
What is your biggest challenge in your sport, and what do you do to manage this challenge?
Smith: The biggest challenge I face with soccer is the time commitment required given I am involved in a lot of other school and community activities. Creating a schedule and staying organized helps me manage that challenge.
What was the best advice you were ever given?
Smith: Sometimes you have to say no to things for your own good. Specifically, as a young adult these days, it’s easy to become stretched too thin with activities and commitments so it’s important to recognize when you have too much on your plate and have the courage to say no to adding more.
What do you love about your sport?
Smith: I love the sense of team associated with playing soccer and the strong bonds I have with the other players on the team.
What do you like to do outside of your sport? I enjoy running, photography/videography, baking, and travel when not on the soccer field. I am also involved in many school and community activities.
What has being a member of a team taught you?
Smith: For a team to be successful, the individuals must support one another at all times and put the team’s interests above their own. You have to support one another through the ups and downs and in good and bad times.
What is the best piece of advice you received from a coach or mentor?
Smith: The best piece of advice I have received is to acknowledge when you are over-committed and don’t be afraid to let others know when you are stretched too thin.
