Meet Sequoyah HS 2023 graduate and Bradshaw Farm Barracudas assistant coach Brett Lowry

CANTON, Ga. — Brett Lowry has served as an Assistant Coach for the Bradshaw Farm Barracudas summer swim team for the past three summers. He has been swimming for a long time – starting at 3 years old – and joined the Bradshaw Farm Barracudas at 5 years old. Swimming on the team every summer since, he eventually joined the Sequoyah High School swim team with which he has made it to the state championship all four years. After graduation, Brett plans to attend Georgia Tech where he will be studying Nuclear Engineering. He is unsure of his ability to continue as a coach but may join the rec swim team on campus.

A highlight of his coaching career was in the 2021 summer season when the Bradshaw Farm Barracudas were victorious against their rivals, the Woodlands Waves. The Barracudas were undefeated in that season with a record of 5-0. Brett says, “The best feeling is when you’ve helped a swimmer along, given them advice, and he or she finally starts to get it. When it clicks and he or she really improves, it’s such a great encouragement for both the swimmer and the coach. Seeing one’s hard work pay off is the best.”

Brett gives credit to the Barracudas’ head coaches for their leadership during practices and his fellow swimmers for being willing to work hard during those practices. On the Friday morning after each meet, the team gathers to spend a couple of hours eating donuts, playing in the pool, drawing with chalk on the sidewalk, and really enjoying time together in a relaxed way as an opportunity to bond. These “Fun Fridays” are especially encouraging and overshadow a disappointing loss from the evening before.

As a coach, the biggest lesson he has learned is better patience. “While the swimmers certainly make it easy for me as a coach, learning to manage a big team with lots of responsibilities has been helpful. I’ve learned to appreciate small moments in meets and practices without becoming too caught up in the job/management aspect of coaching,” Brett shares. He continues, “I hope to be remembered as a coach who supports his swimmers regardless of performance and one who sought to be peaceable and charitable at all times. Go Cudas!”
