Blockheads bring the BOOM: An inside look at Bloomington’s roller derby team

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — The BOOMington Blockheads are a young, dynamic roller derby team that has taken Bloomington by storm. Founded on January 19th, 2022, the team has quickly become a beloved part of the community, attracting both experienced skaters and those new to the sport.

As the head coach, Mathlete works alongside Cold Justice, Throwing Fitz’, and Warhammer to lead the team. Together, they’ve created a supportive, inclusive environment where everyone can thrive.

“Our founders started skating without any idea of what they were doing,” Mathlete explains. “But in less than a year, they’ve built a real team. They’re all vital to our success.”

The Blockheads have big goals for the current season, with three bouts left to play. “We lost our first game to Louisville,” says Mathlete. “But we’d love to pick up a win this season. Two wins would be a huge success.”

To achieve those goals, the team relies on the leadership of all its members. “Cold Justice and Throwing Fitz’ are both great mentors to the less experienced skaters,” says Mathlete. “Off the track, Purple Fury has done a great job of marketing the team.”

Before each bout, the Blockheads warm up and get familiar with the skating surface. “Each floor has different grip characteristics, which can have a big impact on gameplay,” explains Mathlete. “After that, we’ll talk about our goals for the bout and how we hope to achieve them.”

But it’s not all serious business for the Blockheads. The team knows how to celebrate after a game. “Most bouts have an after party,” says Mathlete. “If they do, you can always find several of our skaters there. There is a special camaraderie that comes with skating a bout against someone. The afterparty is where that kinship is most thoroughly expressed.”

While the Blockheads haven’t broken any records yet, they’re determined to establish some challenging ones for next year’s team to beat. “We are still a very young team, but that has fueled our fire more,” says Mathlete. “We have worked hard to build the skill we have so far and have bonded as a team. All of these things have motivated us to work towards our goals of becoming a strong team representing Bloomington.”

For those interested in joining the Blockheads, the team is always looking for new members. “We love welcoming anyone who wants to skate with us,” says Mathlete. “We have loaner gear available, and several coaches who help teach basic skills to new skaters anytime they feel practice is too advanced for them.”

But even if you’re not interested in skating, there are plenty of ways to support the Blockheads. “Volunteers make all of this possible,” says Mathlete. “And if you’re under the age of 18, contact Thunderbirds Junior Roller Derby. They’re a great organization dedicated to teaching roller derby to kids.”

The BOOMington Blockheads are a force to be reckoned with. Their passion, drive, and camaraderie have made them a beloved part of the Bloomington community. So come out to a bout, cheer them on, and get ready to experience the BOOM!
