Mays was a U.S. Army All-American playing for O’Dea High School and recorded 166 tackles and five interceptions, and was also a threat on the offensive side of the ball, hauling in 765 receiving yards as a senior. Mays joined the USC Trojans and became a three-time All-American recording 276 tackles and five interceptions.

Mays continued his athletic career in the NFL, where he played 80 games, before returning to USC as a defensive analyst.
