Trent Caraway remains even-keeled ahead of MLB draft

DANA POINT, Calif. (BVM) – Royce Lewis was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2017 draft out of JSerra Catholic High School in 2017. Now the Lions have another star that will also likely go fairly early in this year’s MLB draft.

Trent Caraway stands at 6-foot-2, 205 pounds, and brings a good mix of pop and pure hitting ability at the plate. The star shortstop also has one of the best arms in his state at his position.

Kiley McDaniel of ESPN has Caraway as the No. 39 player in this year’s MLB draft.

Baseball was a family affair in his household growing up with Trent’s father and his older brother both playing the sport. Trent would try it out at the recreational field right next to his house, and before long, he was hooked too.

“I started going to all the games and I was like, ‘Oh, this is sick,’” Trent said.

Some of those games included his brother’s All-Star team where they would play teams from other countries. This created great atmospheres and allowed Trent to realize just how global the game was.

“Fans would come and cheer everyone on and I thought that was really cool,” Trent said. “That was a moment I really remember.”

Trent became a star himself as he began playing and would soon receive the attention of colleges across the country. He did not have the traditional recruiting process due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but he was still able to find the perfect school for him in Oregon State.

Caraway announced his commitment to the Beavers as a sophomore.

“I like the whole atmosphere up there with how serious the fans take it,” Caraway said. “The coaches too. It’s a great group of guys. Everyone is super relaxed and chill up there and that kind of fits my vibe.”

Caraway was a top guy already before this spring, but he still managed to bolster his stock after exploding his senior season. He hit .462 this year and finished with 49 hits breaking Lewis’ school record. Caraway was rewarded with the Gatorade Player of the Year for the state of California.

Now he will have a real decision to make come draft time on his future. But regardless of where he winds up next spring, Caraway will still rely on the consistent work ethic that got him here.

“I would say I’m pretty even-keeled,” Caraway said. “If I’m training one day and it’s not the greatest day, I’m still out there doing it to get better. I would say my mindset doesn’t really change. Every day is a new day.”
