SYC Youth Field Hockey gearing up for third season
NEW FREEDOM, Pa. — This fall we will be starting our 3rd season of the SYC Youth Field Hockey program. Over the past 2 years, our program has grown tremendously! For our first fall league, we started with 40 players and that number increased 55 players our second season. We anticipate close to 60 players this coming fall. It’s great to see the sport of field hockey growing in our area.
Our goal for the youth program is to introduce the sport, teach basic stick skills and game knowledge. Ultimately, we aim to prepare players for higher levels of play in middle and high school. I also coach for the Susquehannock Junior High Field Hockey team. For me, it’s exciting to know that players can learn and play the game of field hockey before they get to 7th grade. During my 8 seasons coaching junior high field hockey, most incoming 7th graders have never played field hockey. This upcoming season, I will have seven 7th graders that have participated in the SYC program. When players come in with basic skills, it makes a huge difference and gives the entire team a jump start.
The SYC Youth Field Hockey program offers year-round opportunities for girls and boys in kindergarten through 6th grade. Each year, we offer summer camp, winter indoor clinics and a fall league. This summer, our mini camp is scheduled for June 26th-29th (rain date June 30th) at Susquehannock High School from 9:00 AM to 11:30 AM. Local high school and junior high players help coach at our camp, which is a great volunteer opportunity for them. The camp players really look up to the coaches. Our fall league starts in mid-August and runs through mid to late October. We play other local teams in the SYC area and Northern Maryland. The older teams typically participate in at least one local tournament during the season.
