Golden’s Ella Story: Passionate about ice hockey

GOLDEN, Colo. — Ella Story, a young resident of Lookout Mountain’s Mount Vernon Estates neighborhood, has a passion for ice hockey. At age 13, she’s already planning to play ice hockey in college. These days, she plays defense for two 14U teams. Her Fraser Valley co-ed team, the Eagles, won the Colorado Amateur Hockey Association (CAHA) 14U A state tournament just a few short months ago. Ella also plays for the Colorado 14ers, an all-girls team out of Littleton.

“I love hockey because even if I’m having a terrible day at home or at school, when I can get on the ice, I forget about everything else and just have a good time,” Ella says. “I love being in a cold place and going fast. I love bonding with the team and having fun with all the other players.”

For the CAHA state tournament, held at the Monument Ice Rinks facility in March, the Eagles played five games. “We were nervous for the first game [against Hyland Hills Black of north Denver], but after winning that game, we weren’t really nervous anymore,” Ella recalls. “To win [the tournament by beating Northern Colorado] felt so amazing. We were so happy and excited. The weekend was so fun!”

Ella says that her biggest challenge playing with the Eagles is making sure to be in position so that the boys on the team will feel comfortable passing to her. Before games, she focuses on being calm and running scenarios in her head. She tries to remember advice from coaches to always do her best and have fun.

“Even after a play is done, I keep going as hard as I can. Being on a team has taught me that even if you’re really good, you can’t do anything without your team,” Ella comments. “I’ve made many mistakes, but you just have to get over it and keep trying. You can’t let that mistake get you down. Let it give you the power to do better, and move on.”

Outside of ice hockey, Ella loves riding her mustang, Okee, and playing with her dog, Sky. With her mom, Jen Story, Ella enjoys watching the Formula One World Championship drivers and races featured in the television documentary series Drive to Survive. This girl seems to love speed––on and off the ice!

Ella’s plans for the immediate future include trying out for a AA girls ice hockey team and entering eighth grade at D’Evelyn Jr./Sr. High School. Foothills Living wishes you continued success, Ella!
